That’s a Good Idea
In a few days, my family is going on vacation in Mexico. We’re going with another couple and their two kids. My wife and I are looking forward to the trip, and spending some quality time with our two children. My kids, well, I’m not sure just how much a 3 year old and a 1 ½ year old understand about things like vacations and some place called Mexico.
Today, my wife was explaining to my son Zachary that we were going on the trip. She explained that he, Sarah (his sister), mommy and daddy were all going. She explained that there’d be a swimming pool there and he’d get to wear shorts and a t-shirt the whole time. She explained that we’d all be together and that we’d have a great time together. He replied simply, “That’s a good idea.”
Now in the corporate world, rarely if ever do you see such a great example of clear, concise speech. People hem. They haw. Whatever those verbs actually mean. My three year old had pretty much summed it up with four little words. I agree – I think spending a week with one’s family is, well, a good idea.
We’ve all gone on vacations together in the past, and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Especially the trips to warm climates – Zach loves the water and wearing light clothing. Our recent trip to Lake Tahoe was quite the opposite; he simply refused to wear his coat, which meant we had no choice but to simply refuse to let him play in the snow. Which, after all, was the point of going there in the first place.
So, we’ll see in a few days just how good an idea this trip will turn out to be. If my kids are their typical, joyous, clever selves, I think Zach will have been correct.
